New Free Group For Authors and Book-Lovers!

I've created a new (free) YahooGroup for authors of any status to promote their works/books and to share conversation. Anyone who loves books and wants some new ideas for reading material is also welcome to join!!! Take a look:

The New Yorker Caption Contest

Yet another week goes by and I am astounded by some of the finalists/winner of
Now I know I am not the most brilliant person in the world, but sometimes I do come up with some relatively witty captions! I enter almost every week, and the next week when I check back to see if (God forbid) I was nominated as a finalist, I'm always disappointed (so far). That doesn't bother me so much; It's the fact that when I take a look at the finalists to vote for the winner, 9 times out of 10 they are the least clever, most poorly thought-out captions! I take a look at some of the finalists and winners and think, "Okay, what's the deal? Mine was way funnier than that!". It's kind of like the winners of "America's Funniest Home Videos"---the judges always pick the most plain, unfunny videos; when the rest of the audience knows what video should have been chosen. I'm beginning to think a couple of things are going on here...... 1. Maybe the judges for these captions have really childish senses of humor. 2. Maybe they get so overwhelmed with entries, they just start picking ones here and there, even if they're not that great. Or...3. They only pick out of the people who have chosen to subscribe to the magazine/Have signed up for something online with the magazine.
Maybe all three.
I know I'm not the most clever person in the world, but COME ON!!!! :-) I've been chosen at least a few other times as the winner of other caption contests before, so I know I'm not THAT bad (judging by some of the recent finalists). I'm considering entering next week with the most idiotic line I can think of so maybe I'll be picked.... But it's just a free national caption contest, so what do I know?

My Fascination With Cemeteries

This weekend we took a little day trip to Woodland Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio. It is a HUGE cemetery with a ton of history, and I'm sure we didn't even scratch the surface of it all.
Anyway, here is my Yahoo slideshow.... The pictures automatically change every few seconds and don't forget to look at the captions. There are 57 pictures in total, but it only takes a couple of minutes. Please view the whole thing, as some of the more interesting pictures are in the middle and end. You may share any of the pictures, just as long as I am credited. :-) I'll post more next trip we take. Enjoy!
There was a story from the 1860's about a boy who drowned. His dog tried to save him, and never left his gravesite. Visitors would leave the dog food and the boy's spirit toys---which they still do today. Very unique gravestone of a boy and his dog. The Wright Brothers (of flight) are buried here--as is humorist Erma Bombeck. There were giant obelisks everywhere, as if they were trying to "one up" each other.
No weird encounters with spirits, though. Even though it was very interesting and beautiful, I was more afraid of being attacked and mugged in this place than haunted. ;-)
I found it particularly tacky though, that everywhere we went there were signs up advertising grave spaces available (as if they were real estate!) and empty pre-made crypts for sale.

Creepy or hilarious?

Eastwood Metro Park

I took a break from the birthday party my daughter attended a few weeks ago and snapped this shot of a creek at the back of Eastwood Metro Park (Dayton). You can almost feel someone staring back at you.
